GREEN BUSINESS CERTIFICATE AND CERTIFICATION PROGRAM

We partner with business development organizations and chambers of commerce to offer a Green Business Certificate and Certification Program that sets the standard for what it means to be sustainable. The program is designed to recognize businesses and other entities that have taken voluntary steps to gain knowledge and awareness of sustainable principles; build skills and systems necessary to reduce, reuse and recycle, and develop the ability to integrate sustainable policies and practices into business operations. SEMS™ Certified Green Businesses operate in a manner that demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship by conserving energy and water, reducing their carbon footprint, generating less waste and recycling more.

Core requirements of the Green Business Certificate and Certification Program include completing a distance learning course on basic sustainability concepts (Level 1) and creating a sustainability action plan (Level 2). A web-based tutorial with an online facilitator provides the technical assistance to draft a plan that establishes baselines and includes details of the company’s impact reduction initiatives, specific goals and action steps and timelines to move the business forward. Participants must choose a concentration track (e.g., Construction, Manufacturing/Industrial, Professional Services or Facility Maintenance). Certification requires an on-site audit to validate that sustainability policies and practices are functional and not just self proclamations.
